Antibiotic-resistant salmonellae in pet reptiles in Saudi Arabia

We investigated the occurrence rate of antibiotic-resistant salmonellae in exotic pet reptiles Saudi Arabia. Salmonellae samples were collected from eight different genera (snakes and lizards). Selective enrichment selective plating procedures carried out order to detect salmonellae. Isolated bacteria identified using biochemical tests, API 20E strips, VITEK compact system. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed disc diffusion method. Salmonella spp. belonging subspecies I ( enterica ssp. ) detected 29.2% samples. All showed multidrug resistance (p<0.001, χ 2 ). The results demonstrated that private households could present health hazards humans. Therefore, these animals should be carefully handled avoid infection.
